Museveni’s victims of
shootings, beatings and torture are succumbing to injuries as he reneges on his
compensation pledge
A huge
number of Ugandans are languishing at home and local clinics, nursing wounds
and life threatening injuries inflicted
on them by Museveni’s security forces.
Many
poverty-stricken households are grappling with taking care of at least a member
or two, who were shot or beaten up by security forces in different parts of the
country during the violence-marred elections. Most of these families cannot
afford to put daily food on the table, let alone specialized medical expenses.
Twenty-one
year-old Shaluwa Namukose, a resident of Mafubira ward in Northern division in
Jinja city is rotting away without any help after being shot by security forces
on February 18, 2021. She is just one example of innocent Ugandans shot after
Museveni ordered security forces to crack down on the opposition after it
became clear that Ugandans wanted change.
During one
of his paranoia-driven state house briefings, Museveni pledged to compensate
victims of his brutality. However, as those injured continue to succumb to
their injuries, Museveni is instead adding more victims to the list, while the
pledged compensation has not materialized.
Instead, the
victims and their families are being made to move around government offices
following up on the compensation, ending up using the little money they have on
transport. In Jinja, after police irresponsibly shot at NUP supporters during a
campaign rally, the Kira road police spokesperson Abbey Ngako publicly pledged
to foot the bills of victims. This never happened, and when families go to the
different police stations to follow up on the pledge, the commanders just hide
in their offices, or bolt out through the back door.
Most of the
election time victims have either died or are rotting at home because local
clinics can no longer admit them due to the already huge bills accumulated.
Also, hospitals and clinics already know Museveni is a conman that reneges on
his pledges!
NUP leaders
have tried their level best to foot the bills of some victims, but with more
and more victims needing assistance on a daily basis, the challenge is
insurmountable. The dictator has rubbed salt in the wounds, one can say.
