Extreme Panic and double standards define Museveni's run up to 2021
elections.
When Covid 19 struck, Museveni and his electoral commission decided that the normal campaigns be replaced by they came to call scientific campaigns on radio, TV and social media as a way to avoid exposing the citizenry to the deadly virus during crowded rallies as has always been the norm.
People from across the political divide questioned its
practicability considering the lack of good will from Museveni, his rubber
stamp Electoral Commission and partisan security but nevertheless they had to
give him the benefit of doubt one last time.
Hardly a week into the "scientific campaigns", NUP's Bobi Wine on consultations in Mbale was blocked from accessing the local radio station to address his supporters and the police was not even ashamed to fire tear gas and live bullets disperse un armed NUP supporters.
Lt. Gen Henry Tumukunde was not spared days later when he went to Njeru to meet his campaign team for Eastern Uganda when he was embarrassingly arrested by police for flouting presidential Covid directives yet he was meeting a handful of his agents who respected the presidential directives of wearing masks and social distancing to the slightest detail.
Just at the end of last week Nakaseke incumbent Member of
Parliament the Hon Luttamaguzi Joseph was arrested enroute to meet a handful of
his supporters and has since been remanded to prison crime being disobeying
presidential directive and attempted murder.
On the contrary NRM candidates at all levels are enjoying uninterrupted airtime on various radio and TV stations country wide and as if that is not enough, hold massive rallies with thousands of supporters under the watchful eyes of "security" as if Covid 19 does mean anything to them.
It's as of few days ago after all their candidates had
campaigned enough and of course concerned Ugandans posting videos and photos
from NRM candidates rallies, that the ever comical and hypocritical Museveni
issued the IGP with orders to arrest whoever flouts the presidential Covid 19
directives.
It's because of this order from "Above" that the incumbent MP Bufumbira South Hon Sam Bitangaro was "arrested" on Friday after holding a mammoth crowd of supporters in Kabindi in Nyarusiza Subcounty and detained at Kisoro Central police station. Surprisingly though, he was treated like royalty and released on police bond on a weekend something that never happens in the country.
What sort of double standards and impunity is this?
In conclusion, Museveni and his regime are in so much panic that they can't afford to have a level political ground with opposition. They more like a boxer having a referee handcuff his opponent before a big fight.
What a shame on someone who claims to enjoy massive support from his people and fears to go into fair elections with his perceived weak and not so popular opposition!!!
